It always seemed like such a ridiculous abusive husband lie, but I could easily have gotten a shiner. Of course, unless you are one of the few people who actually do this, it sounds like an abusive person's lie. In fact, have you ever seen the "I Love Lucy" episode where Lucy gets a black eye. I have a feeling they don't play it often. I was surprised by a) how seriously upset Fred and Ethel are by possible abuse, even in the 1950s, but that b) they, of course, blame it on Ricky's Latin-ness. It really is a gem.
