can i have a drink list?: installment 1

an every-so-often list of cocktails i’ve imbibed over the preceding seven days. it only lists mixed drinks, and it only lists venues that are publicly accessible, because i don’t want to be one of those douchey “i was so on the list, and you aren’t” bloggers.

bee’s knees, gin lane: there are many things that are totally wrong about paying $14 for a drink in the former village idiot space. i mean, where are the 3 a.m. dollar pbrs? and why does all the expensive-looking furniture look like it’s been smooshed together? and why don’t the drinks taste better, considering that they should contain perfectly calibrated proportions of everything at that price? (one shaker)

ward eight, temple bar: temple bar’s swank-but-not-douchebaggy atmosphere makes it so much fun (you can tell it doesn’t take itself too seriously because of the popcorn on the tables). i could have sucked these down all night, but i cut my outing with jami short because i knew that having more than three would equal nothing but trouble. it went best with the salt-and-pepper calamari, which should serve as a testament to its power as a) i usually am repulsed by squid and b) deciding that a drink tasted extra-good with it must have been something really special. (four and a half shakers)

sam’s serious egg nog, waterfront ale house: it’s like a night around the holiday fireplace, especially the whole “making you feel warm” part. i’m now trying to step up my whole spiking-nog-at-home game as a result (thankfully, i have dogfish head’s brown rum to aid me). bonus part: no hangover, even though i knocked back three after dinner with andy. (five shakers, plus an extra shot)

bee’s knees, daddy-o: yeah, i know, a bee’s knees is a total girl drink–it’s named after a teenybopper phrase from the middle of last century, for god’s sake–but i still love it, and daddy-o pours the second-best one i’ve ever tasted. (the top? little branch, located right across the street.) it’s probably made even sweeter by its being from one of the best bars in the city–daddy-o has a top-notch cocktail list, super-friendly bartenders, and a neighborhoody atmosphere that’s pretty unheard-of in manhattan these days. (beth, you are so lucky to have this bar around the corner.) also: tater tots!! (five shakers)

violet eyes (i think? basically a t n’ t with violet extract), salt bar: fresh from daddy-o before meeting up with sara, i wanted to stick with gin; i’ve had violet gum before, and this drink’s floral finish was absolutely luscious. i switched to a fairly decent zinfandel because i figured it would pair better with my duck confit salad than the fresh-from-the-garden cocktail i was enjoying, but that was a decision i had to seriously weigh. (four shakers)

Your preface amuses me. I’m alcohol-free, so the list went over my head, but anyway..
